Candide (Recorded Books Unabridged Classics) info
With this classic literary caricature, Voltaire- champion of the Enlightenment and one of France's greatist cynics and literary satirists- mocks those who stand in the midst of depravity and state, "All is well with the world." The Baron's daughter is attempting to study cause and effect with the guileless young Candide when the Baron discovers their lesson. Suddenly Candide finds himself uncermoniously kicked out of the castle, along with his tutor, the good and blindly optimistic Dr. Pangloss. As the two search out first-hand the answers to life's perennial mysteries, they suffer a multitude of horrible disasters, from burning at the stake to polite society itself. Voltaire was quick to attack tyranny, bigotry, persecution, and prejudice wherever they reared their ugly heads, and his favorite weapon was the "philosophic story"- of which the farcical Candide is in his finest.
